MIKA KAWADA

Composer and Improvising Pianist

Mika Kawada is a composer and improvising pianist whose poetic, nostalgic music evokes memory and emotion.

Centered on the delicate, translucent resonance of the piano, her practice encompasses music for films, documentaries, and visual art; sound works that respond to moving images and architectural spaces; and live improvisation.

She began studying piano at the age of three and pursued vocal studies from high school through university, specializing in opera. During her university years, she studied in Italy. After graduating, she worked as a vocal coach before developing her career as a composer and improvising pianist.

She composed the music for the feature-length documentary Daughter of the Light and the NHK BS1 documentary Tibet: A Distant Journey of the Heart. Daughter of the Light received the Audience Award at the EBS International Documentary Festival and was nominated for the NETPAC Award for Best Asian Film at the Ulju Mountain Film Festival. The film has been screened internationally, including an extended theatrical run in China and presentations in Berlin, New York, Colorado, and France.

Her work spans film, visual art, moving image, and cultural events, including the Setouchi Triennale, Ars Electronica Festival, projects at The National Art Center, Tokyo, and a cherry blossom reception at the Embassy of the United Kingdom in Japan.

作曲家・即興ピアニスト

河田美香

詩的な風景や郷愁を感じさせる音楽を通して、聴く人の記憶や感情に触れる作曲家・即興ピアニスト。

繊細で透明感のあるピアノの響きを軸に、映画・ドキュメンタリー・美術作品のための音楽制作、映像や空間と調和するサウンドアプローチ、即興演奏を行っている。

3歳よりピアノを始め、高校から大学まで声楽を専門的に学ぶ。大学ではオペラを専攻し、在学中にイタリアへ留学。卒業後はボイストレーナーを務めたのち、作曲家・即興ピアニストとして活動を本格化する。

長編ドキュメンタリー映画『Daughter of the Light』、NHK BS1ドキュメンタリー「チベット・遥かな心の旅」の音楽を担当。

『Daughter of the Light』は、EBS International Documentary FestivalでAudience Award（観客賞）を受賞し、Ulju Mountain Film FestivalではNETPAC賞（最優秀アジア映画賞）にノミネートされた。

中国での長期劇場上映をはじめ、ベルリン、ニューヨーク、コロラド、フランスなど世界各地で上映されている。

瀬戸内国際芸術祭、Ars Electronica Festival、国立新美術館、東京藝術大学美術館、SITE Santa Fe、Exploratoriumなど、国内外の芸術祭・美術館・文化機関で音楽表現を行っている。
